FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

GENERAL QUESTIONS

  • We strongly recommend having international travel insurance. While we have first aid kits available at La Isla, please be aware that our remote location may require transportation in the event of a serious injury or delicate health issue. Although we will assist you with everything necessary, La Isla will not be responsible for transportation costs in the event of an evacuation.

The Tua Pejat District Hospital is located 20 minutes from the harbor and can provide first aid or address basic medical issues. For more advanced medical care, facilities are available in Padang, approximately four hours away by speedboat.

  • Yes, a visa is required to enter Indonesia. Travelers can obtain a visa on arrival at their point of entry for stays of up to 30 days, which can be extended for an additional 30 days. Please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry and has at least one blank page for the visa stamp.

In addition to the visa, all surfers must pay a surf tax to access the area's world-renowned waves. This tax helps maintain and protect local surf spots while supporting the community. The fee is typically paid upon arrival, and it’s important to keep your receipt, as you may need to present it during your stay.

Before traveling, we recommend checking the latest visa regulations and surf tax requirements, as they may change. If you have any questions or need assistance with the process, feel free to reach out to us!

HOW TO GET HERE?

The Mentawai Islands are a remote archipelago located 150 km off the coast of Western Sumatra, Indonesia. Getting there requires careful planning, as access is not easy, but the adventure is well worth it. Here's a breakdown of the steps:

1. Fly to Padang, Sumatra

The most direct entry points are Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. From either city, you need to catch a flight to Padang City in Sumatra.

  • Tip: You'll need to spend one night in Padang before continuing your journey.

2. Take the Mentawai Fast Ferry

The Mentawai Fast Ferry departs from Padang to Tua Pejat on Sipora Island.

  • Ferry Details: The ferry ride takes 3.5 hours and operates only on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

  • Important: You need to arrive in Padang on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday to catch the ferry the following morning.

3. Accommodation in Padang

There is a wide range of accommodation options in Padang to suit different budgets, so you’ll have no trouble finding a place to stay overnight.

4. Alternative: Flight to Rokot Airport

Alternatively, you can take a 40-minute flight from Padang to Rokot Airport in Sipora.

  • Logistics: This option may be more convenient, but it has some challenges. Surfboards are not allowed on the plane, and flights are only available on Tuesdays and Fridays.

  • Unreliability: Schedules can change on short notice, and there can be last-minute cancellations, so it's a bit less predictable.
